Real Cost Calculator

Tap the Calculate tab and enter the product you want to compare — be as specific as you like. "Hidden Valley Ranch 16oz" works just as well as "ranch dressing."

• Enter your ZIP code so the app uses real prices for your region
• Enter how many times per week you use it — this drives your monthly and yearly savings numbers
• Tap Calculate Real Cost and let the app do the math

Standing in the grocery store? Skip the typing. Tap Scan a Barcode at the top of the Calculate tab and point your camera at the barcode on any product.

• The app reads the barcode and looks up the product in a database of 3+ million foods
• It auto-fills the product name and pulls the real ingredient list from the actual label
• Flagged additives are identified from the real ingredients — not estimates

After a calculation, the app suggests a homemade ingredient list with estimated costs. These are just a starting point — make them yours.

• Tap any ingredient name to rename it
• Tap the price field next to it and enter what you actually pay
• Tap + Add ingredient to add something the app missed
• Tap × to remove an ingredient you wouldn't use

Your savings numbers update in real time as you edit. You can also type a total cost directly into the Total homemade cost per batch field at the bottom to override everything.

Once you're happy with a calculation, tap Save This Swap to add it to your tracker. Head to the Saved tab to see everything you've compared.

• Tap any saved swap to open its detail sheet
• Add a recipe link so your go-to recipe is always one tap away
• Log when you last made it — tap "Today" or pick a date
• Add notes like "use King Arthur flour" or "double batch for freezer"
• Tap Edit to update the price if ingredients get cheaper or more expensive
• Sort your swaps by Most Savings, Recently Added, or Made Recently

The top of the Saved tab shows your total savings across every swap you've tracked — updated automatically every time you add or edit a swap.

• Monthly savings — what you save each month if you make every swap
• Yearly savings — the big number. This is what you're leaving on the table at the store
• Harmful ingredients replaced — unique additives you've cut from your pantry

Every saved swap has a Share button in its detail sheet. Tap it to generate a beautiful 1080×1080 card showing your savings for that specific product.

• Shows the product name, store price vs homemade cost, and savings per month and year
• Tap Download to save it to your camera roll
• Tap Copy Image to paste it directly into Instagram Stories or a message

The Saved tab dashboard also has a Share My Total Savings button that generates a card showing your combined savings across all swaps — perfect for showing off your full pantry transformation.

The Chemicals tab is a full reference guide to 80+ harmful ingredients commonly hiding in store-bought products — organized into six categories.

• Preservatives — what keeps things shelf-stable at the cost of your health
• Dyes & Colorings — synthetic colors banned in most of Europe
• Flavor Enhancers — additives that make food artificially addictive
• Emulsifiers & Stabilizers — gut microbiome disruptors hiding in everyday foods
• Sweeteners — from HFCS to aspartame and everything between
• Personal Care — what's in your shampoo, lotion, and deodorant

Each entry shows concern level, what products it hides in, why it's flagged, and where it's banned worldwide. Use the search bar to look up any specific ingredient.

Your saved swaps live on your device — not in a cloud. Before switching phones or deleting the app, download a backup.

• CSV download — opens in Excel, Google Sheets, or uploads directly into the Real Cost Tracker Notion template
• Summary download — a plain text backup with all your swaps listed out, easy to email to yourself

To restore: go to the Saved tab, scroll to the bottom, tap Choose CSV File and select your backup. Your swaps are restored instantly.

At the bottom of the Calculate tab you'll find seasonal swap ideas that rotate with the time of year — ingredients that are cheapest and most abundant right now.
